What is Belkyra®?

This medication is composed of deoxycholate, a synthetic non-animal chemical that can disrupt the cell membrane of fat cells so that they die and are naturally eliminated by the body. Deoxycholate is found naturally in our bodies to break down the fat that we eat. When injected, deoxycholic acid will destroy the cell membranes of fat cells under the skin and help with the absorption of fat. Over a series of treatments, this injectable will help to reduce the fat layer in the chin to help redefine your jawline and slim your chin. It is an effective way to get rid of your double chin without surgery. Belkyra® is Health Canada and FDA approved.

The Procedure

Victoria Park Medispa (The Derm Centre) procedure is simple and fast. We identify the area to be targeted, and coloured dots are temporarily placed on the skin for the procedure. Belkyra® is then injected into the targeted fat pocket. Each session takes only a few minutes, and then you can return to normal activities.

Does it hurt?

Topical numbing agent can be used to help make Belkyra® as comfortable as possible, are usually not required. Injections take only a few minutes to administer so before you know it, the treatment is over!

Is Belkyra® Safe?

Yes, when administered by a Victoria Park Medispa (The Derm Centre) experienced injector. There are some complications that can arise, just like with any cosmetic treatment. Deoxycholic acid does not recognize what cell it needs to destroy, and if injected improperly, it can destroy non-fat cells. Skin cell damage, nerve injury and facial muscle weakness may arise.

Recovery and Side Effects

There are usually no side effects beyond normal swelling and bruising that are quite normal after any injection. Swelling is the most common. This will occur after the injection and can last up to 3 days. Bruising, some discomfort, itchiness and redness, usually accompany most swelling. Patients may experience numbness or tenderness or even a mixture of both under the chin, which can last up to 2 months. You can walk out and return to work and most daily activities right after the treatment. It is advised to avoid very strenuous exercise for a few days after as this may increase bruising and prolong swelling.

Who is not a good candidate for Belkyra®?

Women who are pregnant or breast feeding are not suitable candidates for any injection. Also patients who have severe liver or heart problems may need to reconsider undergoing this treatment. Patients who have a lot of excess skin are not good candidates for this treatment as Belkyra® does not treat loose skin; such patients would be better suited for a neck lift.

How many sessions are required?

Everyone is different, but on average we recommend 2-6 sessions to see optimal results, reducing double chin fat noticeably. Sessions are 4 - 8 weeks apart.
